Medical Assistance: Healthcare Requirements for a 26-Week Premature Infant

The applicant's baby was born prematurely at 26 weeks, resulting in severe developmental delays and a formal diagnosis of cerebral palsy tendencies. This condition could lead to coordination issues and cognitive impairments, and in the worst case, cause a complete loss of mobility and severe intellectual disabilities. As a result, the baby has needed to remain hospitalized for treatment until their condition stabilizes.

The family faces significant financial pressure due to the monthly cost of approximately HKD 4,000 for the rental of a respirator and the replacement of oxygen tanks. Their only income comes from the baby's disability allowance and the mother's part-time job.

Our foundation provided case assistance for nearly two years, offering this family a monthly subsidy of HKD 3,000, primarily used to cover the baby's medical expenses. The doctor indicated that the baby would require further professional treatment in the future.

After a year, the applicant reported that the baby's condition had finally improved, allowing for interaction, which brought them great comfort. Despite the challenges, they continued to seek change and support.

Eventually, after about two years, the case successfully received government welfare assistance. In this case, our goal was not only to alleviate their medical burden but also to serve a supportive role, helping them navigate this difficult period before successfully applying for government aid.
